The Power of Media in Conflict: Israel, Palestine, Iran and the Battle for Public Opinion
At a full-capacity session at Arendalsuka, Hanne Skartveit, Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib and Alex Vatanka

On Sunday 18 October, Kos & Kaos – together with Moishe House and Det Mosaiske Trossamfund – opened Understanding Jewish Life, a ten-month journey through the history and ideas that have shaped Jewish life as we know it today, from rabbinic Judaism, Kabbalah and Hasidism to modern movements, secular Jewish culture and Zionism.
The opening lecture was given by Elon Gilad – historian, Hebrew language expert and Haaretz columnist – who took us on a journey through the Hebrew language itself: the old and the new. He traced how the ancient language of scripture and prayer was transformed into the living, everyday Hebrew spoken today, how modern Hebrew was deliberately built, and how new words are still being created and brought into the language.
It was a fascinating and brilliant evening – a reminder that Hebrew is not only a language we inherited, but one that continues to be shaped, invented and renewed.
A big thank you to Det Mosaiske Trossamfund (DMT), who helped make this evening happen, and to Moishe House for the collaboration.
Elon Gilad’s lecture was not recorded, but you can get a taste of his work in the videos on this page.
