Lines of Memory

We had a fantastic opening of Lines of Memory at Tjuvholmen, with a full house and an overwhelmingly warm reception. Since the opening night, the gallery has welcomed a steady stream of visitors, and several of the works available for sale have already found new homes. The atmosphere surrounding the exhibition has been deeply engaging and thoughtful, and the response from both audiences and the press has been exceptionally positive.

Lines of Memory is part of the ongoing Jewish Minds – Global Traces series by Kos & Kaos, a cultural initiative exploring how Jewish history, ideas, migration, memory, and artistic contribution have shaped global culture and modern society. The exhibition is supported by Fritt Ord and the Arts & Culture Norway (Kulturdirektoratet).

The exhibition brings together works by some of the most influential Jewish artists in modern and contemporary art. It includes works by Marc Chagall, whose poetic visual language of memory, love, exile, and Jewish life helped shape modern art itself. It also features works by Nan Goldin, one of the most important contemporary photographers of our time, known for her intimate and uncompromising portrayals of human relationships and vulnerability. Visitors can also experience works by Anish Kapoor, whose monumental and philosophical sculptures have transformed contemporary art internationally, alongside works by Pierre Alechinsky, a central figure of the COBRA movement, the Danish-Jewish painter Tal R, and Adam Saks.

The exhibition is curated by Henrik Placht, professor, artist, and one of Norway’s most internationally engaged cultural figures. Placht has been a visiting professor at 37 universities around the world, including Columbia University, as well as institutions in Saigon and even Pyongyang, North Korea. In 2002, he initiated the establishment of the International Academy of Art Palestine in Ramallah — Palestine’s first contemporary art academy — which he helped build through Oslo National Academy of the Arts and worked with for seven years. He has also served as professor at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Lines of Memory remains open at Tjuvholmen alle 23 through the end of May 2026.
